Postpartum, the Infamous Day Three
After growing a baby for nine months and then the hours spent birthing that baby, suddenly it is over, the baby in arms, the empty space inside where once resided little one and placenta. The blood stream is flooded with extra cell debris, and de-animated proteins which must be processed by the immune system. The organs have to shift back into place. The uterus is undergoing involution. The breasts are producing milk.
There is a sudden endocrine shift that takes place around day three. Estrogen production is now replaced by prolactin. The milk comes in and the tears may flow.
All is as it should be.
This time of great sensitivity and open heartedness.
You may hear other women discussing their day three experiences, that is because there is something quite normal, quite common about these changes.
What our culture has turned its back on is what tribal cultures experienced as life passages, times of upheaval and great change. SACRED times. Times to be honored, not avoided or rushed. Expectations are to birth your baby and get back in the race as soon as possible to avoid lost productivity.
Many cultures honor and cherish the postpartum time. These first few days or weeks are when subtle connections are being made on many levels. This is when mom and baby begin to establish and coincide their innate rhythms and psychic connections with baby on the outside of the mother, yet still very much a part of her aura for the first year or so.
Day three is a sacred day, the mom has opened her body and spirit wide to allow this baby to enter this earth, now there is a closing that must take place. Day three is NOT the day to go shopping. Day three is NOT the day to have a lot of visitors. Day three is the day to relax, drink tea, eat nourishing food, and be pampered.
The Amish are a good example of healthy postpartum time. They hire a girl to come and do the household chores and care for the other children. The mom stays in bed and takes it easy for ten days.
There are other cultures that encourage restful postpartum as the belief is that it impacts regeneration and longevity.
Some women will take six weeks as sacred time, staying home, limiting visitors. At the end of this
time, re-entering the world with the new little one in tow, one can carry Sacred into the world.
TIPS FOR POSTPARTUM HEALTH:
Essential oils, lavender is very calming, use as aromatherapy oil
Herbal teas, such as chamomile or sleepy time are helpful, you can make a strong infusion using 2 or 3 tea bags
Herbal tinctures: Motherwort, Valerian, Passion flower all relaxing and calming
Rescue Remedy is a nice, calming homeopathic remedy
Chocolate
Baths with postpartum herbs or epsom salt
Stay hydrated
Eat nourishing foods, homemade soups are easily digested and loaded with nutrients.
Protein and/or green drinks are helpful at this time, quick nutrients that bypass digestion.
Minimize distractions, visitors, tv
Hold Sacred Space
BREATHE, when one feels overwhelmed, often slow and deep breathing is a very good way to help move into a parasympathetic response, from a sympathetic or fight or flight response.
REST, REST, REST
Massage with a sensitive massage therapist would be helpful
Hire a postpartum doula.
Ask for what you need, don't assume people know what you need.
It's ok if you feel sad and are crying, there is much going on metabolically and biochemically right now, don't attach anything to your sadness, just observe it and let it pass through you. Your body, heart, and spirit has been opened wide.
Remember, postpartum is six weeks, don't expect too much too soon from yourself.
The problem is not Day Three, the problem is our misunderstanding of what Day Three is really about.
Blessings on your Day Three!

Carbohydrate Metabolism
Carbohydrates are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Carbohydrates are used for the production of energy, either burned with physical activity or stored as fat for later use as fuel.
Unlike protein and fats, carbohydrates are not used to rebuild or repair tissues.
Unlike proteins and fats, carbohydrates are not used in the production of hormones.
Carbohydrates are used strictly for energy or stored as fat for later use.
Although all cells require glucose for metabolic function, neither glucose or other sugars are required in the diet.
When carbohydrates are consumed, the pancreas releases insulin in response to the elevation in the blood sugar. The body recognizes carbohydrates as sugar, whether the source is fruit or candy or white bread, the metabolic response is the same.
Some foods have more glycemic volatility than others as seen in many glycemic indexes. The blood sugar rises, the pancreas releases insulin in response to the rising blood sugars. The elevated blood sugars trigger the release of adrenaline and other stress hormones such as cortisol, activating the autonomic nervous system.
Over consumption of carbohydrates stresses the pancreas to overwork by producing excess insulin, increasing LDL cholesterol and predisposes one to diabetes due to fluctuating blood sugars. Unstable blood sugars are very damaging to the system because high blood sugars can trigger cytokine inflammatory responses that cause the overproduction of ROS, reactive oxygen species, in the form of nitric oxide, superoxide and peroxidase.
Inflammation in it's many forms can have an affect on carbohydrate metabolism with the overproduction of Interleukin 6. Interleukin 6 is insulin site compatible and can block insulin function at the cell surface. Oxidation can damage adjacent tissue which can lead to pain, chronic disease and increased aging.
Blood sugars and insulin reactions can facilitate endocrine responses that affect hormone cascades. Insulin and leptin are hormones and are a part of the cannabinoid system that helps regulate energy intake and expenditure of carbohydrate metabolism. Biochemical cascades activate insulin responses, cortisol is released, estrogen and other hormones are affected. Many women will experience fluctuations in blood sugar in the days before their period, which often leads to cravings.
When blood sugar drops too low, the sympathetic nervous system activates, the adrenal glands release epinephrine, and the liver is activated to release glycogen to help elevate the blood sugar.
Emotions and blood sugars go hand in hand. The brain depends on blood sugar for most of it's fuel. Emotional stress can have an effect on the blood sugar and high and low blood sugars can have an affect on emotional outlook and resiliency.
Too high or too low blood sugars reaching the brain can result in memory loss, mental stress, anger, irritability, slow thinking or depression.
Hypoglycemia awareness is when the blood sugar drops below 55 or 60 and the person may not realize they are having a reaction, but may exhibit unusual behavior over a short period of time. Due to the release of stress hormones, the person will likely refuse to acknowledge a problem, can act irrationally, may be angry and irritable, insisting they "feel fine". Thinking is impaired, fight or flight can be activated, stress hormones are high and an emotional response is likely. Symptoms of a blood sugar or insulin reaction may include headache, shaking, sweating, disorientation, heart rate increase, being silly or unreasonable, tiredness and numbness or tingling.
If a person has reduced insulin production, or when the insulin is too low, the cells are unable to use glucose and must rely on fat reserves for fuel. As more and more fat is burned for fuel, a byproduct called ketones are produced, and in excess, build up in the blood causing an acidic condition. The body is unable to burn the glucose so it remains high in the blood stream, the ketones increase causing increasing acidity in the blood, which can affect dehydration. Ketosis can be a life threatening condition, especially in the diabetic.
Excess carbohydrates in the diet contribute to undesirable weight gain, metabolic imbalances, and a dysaerobic condition predisposing one to fungal and bacterial infections due to high blood sugars, autonomic nervous system stress, depletion of vital reserves and antioxidants. Excess consumption of carbohydrates are a major contributor to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Build a Better Baby: Protein Intake and Assimilation
Protein, carbohydrates and fats, often referred to as macronutrients are essential for daily intake. Adequate protein is essential for building muscle mass. In pregnancy, protein intake is essential for growing a healthy baby and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
If one is not consuming adequate fats and proteins, one is most likely consuming excess carbohydrates. Relying too heavily on carbohydrates predisposes one to high cholesterol due to unstable blood sugars. Diabetes, inflammation and excess weight gain can result.
Inadequate protein intake in pregnancy is linked to preeclampsia, which is actually a symptom of malnutrition. Often, increasing protein dramatically is what helps to improve preeclampsia or toxemia in pregnancy.
Generally speaking, daily protein intake is approximately 50-60 grams. In pregnancy, add an additional 25 grams after 20 weeks. 75 grams would meet the protein requirements of pregnancy and help to avoid metabolic problems. When increasing dietary protein, one may also need to increase their digestion of protein. The use of digestive enzymes and/or HCL, (betaine hydrochloric acid), can be very beneficial. Consuming protein at each meal, and for snacks, is a good way to ensure protein intake.
Eggs, dairy, fish and poultry are good sources of protein. One egg contains 6-7 grams of protein.
One half cup of cottage cheese contains 12 grams of protein.
High protein powders are a convenient way to ensure protein intake. There are non-GMO soy protein powders, whey protein, egg white protein, pea powder and hemp powder, all of which may be added to drinks or cooking. There are approximately 28 grams of protein in a scoop of whey protein, (which is almost 5 Tablespoons or 28 grams). Protein powders are easily assimilated as digestion is not required, the protein is already broken down to a small size.
Vegetarians are able to get good quality protein if they include nuts and seed to their diet, and don't rely too heavily on grains.
Here are the protein contents of a few foods for comparison.
Dry beans and legumes: 7-8 grams per 1/4 cup dry.
Sunflower seeds: 8 grams of protein per 1/4 cup.
Almonds: 6 grams protein per 1/4 cup.
Pistachios: 6 grams per 1/4 cup.
Nut butters are a delicious and high fat (good fat), and protein addition to soups and sauces. Almond butter, sunflower butter, sesame butter or tahini and cashew butter are all delicious ways to increase your nutrient and caloric consumption..
Adequate fat intake is essential for health, brain health and neurological function. Daily fat intake should be approximately 25-30 per cent of the total calories consumed. A lack of good quality fat in the diet can predispose one to depression. The brain needs fat to function properly. If one is not consuming adequate fats and proteins, one is most likely consuming too many carbohydrates.
Almond flour, quinoa flour and garbanzo flour are all high protein alternatives to high carbohydrate, gluten flours and as replacements are quite delicious and easy to include in cooking and baking.
High protein, gluten free grains are a very good dietary option.
Wild rice: 6 grams protein in 1/4 cup, twice the protein as brown rice.
Quinoa: 6 grams protein per 1/4 cup.
If one chooses soy as a protein alternative, try to avoid the TVP or hydrogenated soy protein as it is overly processed. Tofu, edamame, miso or tempeh are good sources of protein. The detrimental part of the soy, the bean casings are not present. They have either been removed, not developed or have been broken down by culture or fermentation.
The efficiency of digestive enzymes is what determines the assimilation of the protein. Enzymes, particularly protease and HCL, hydrochloric acid, assist with the digestion of protein, and lipase and bile assist with the digestion of fats. Hydrochloric acid, or HCL can be added, taken as a supplement which is made from beets and sold as Betaine HCL.
Other foods can be used as digestive aids. Apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon added to a small amount of water before eating a meal heavy in protein may assist with the breakdown of the protein.
Fresh pineapple contains bromelain which acts as a digestive aid. Fresh and dried papaya contain papain, a powerful digestive aid. Papaya enzymes are also available in tablet form.
Another thing that will aid digestive efficiency is to avoid consuming beverages one half hour before and one half hour after eating, so as not to dilute the digestive enzymes.
Taking additional digestive enzymes, such as a broad spectrum digestive enzyme can help to ensure digestive efficiency. A broad spectrum digestive aid would contain amylase, protease, lipase and cellulase. The additional enzymes help to break down foods to their elemental constituents, helping to eliminate under digested food particles from entering the bloodstream where they are tagged as invaders, activating an immune response. Breaking our foods down adequately insures better absorption, higher utilization and less immune response.
Consuming adequate protein and breaking it down into the elemental constituents is what provides nutrients to build tissue. Improving digestion at any time is helpful to build optimal health, but during pregnancy, improving digestion will help you to be healthy and happy and help you to grow a healthy, happy baby!
Metabolic typing and food sensitivity testing will provide a personalized program for choosing foods that are compatible with your metabolism. Unknowingly consuming foods that are incompatible with your system can wreak havoc on an otherwise healthy lifestyle. Consuming foods one is sensitive to will activate the immune system repeatedly. Having food sensitivity testing will offer the assurance that the foods you are consuming will not be problematic.
ALCAT food sensitivity testing can provide a personalized rotation food plan.

The Importance of Fats and Cell Membrane Permeability
Cell membrane permeability is a basic, essential component of our health. All of the cells in our bodies are composed of a bi-lipid cell membrane. The cell membranes are composed of a layer of sterols and a layer of fatty acids, and that balance of fats has a huge influence on our overall health and well being. That is referred to as surface tension. Surface tension determines if one is stuck in an anabolic or catabolic state, if one is in an anaerobic or dysaerobic state, if one is prone to soft or hard stools, if one is prone to polyuria or oliguria.
Surface tension readings are obtained from an individual's urine, which indicates whether one is in an anabolic or catabolic state. High surface tension can cause anabolism, which is cellular lockdown, nutrients are unable to get into the cells and waste and viruses are unable to exit the cells. People stuck in an anabolic state may harbor viruses.
Low surface tension is an indicator that the person is unable to hold onto their nutrients. The cells are wide open and things flow in and out too easily. This is the catabolic state. The person is falling apart, the body is trying to obtain protein by disassembling the body's protein stores, instead of using dietary protein. This process creates waste products that stress the kidneys. The SAD (Standard American Diet) is heavily saturated with PUFA's, (Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids), which cause a more catabolic, dysaerobic state.
Through metabolic screening, one is able to obtain surface tension readings. Surface tension is a player in conditions such as constipation or diarrhea, excessive urination or insufficient urination, and whether one in an anaerobic or a dysaerobic state, (not enough oxygen at the cellular level or oxygen out of control.
Membrane dynamics influence many aspects of an individual's health, especially cellular hydration distribution, often referred to as cellular osmosis and hydration shuttle.
Determining a person's surface tension, and making dietary suggestions regarding sterol and EFA consumption influences a persons health at a cellular level. Symptoms may be alleviated by this one simple adjustment.
Dr. Emmanuel Revici, known as The Doctor Who Cures Cancer, used surface tension readings to help determine dietary protocols for the many chronic, so-called, incurable cancer patients that came to him. He had amazing results that greatly impressed top cancer researchers.
As a Nutritional Consultant, surface tension is one of the five homeostatic core control mechanisms that can be influenced through dietary intervention regarding proper intake of sterols and EFA's.
Consider having a metabolic profile done so you know how to proceed with improving your health!

Olive M. Binninger invites you to the formal opening of the John F. Class Health Institution, June 17, 1930.
Healing and helping others is a big part of my family's legacy. My mother is Myrna J Binninger (White), her grandmother, Olive, opened a healing center after her husband died. My grandfather, Clifford (Kip) Binninger worked there as a masseur in the 1930's. Here is how the article was presented in the Telegraph Herald at the time.
Great grandma Olive, this is for you, for all time, Love Joanne.
The Formal Opening of the John F. Class Health Institution
1364 White Street, Tuesday June 17, 1930, Dubuque, Iowa
In the effort to work out my own salvation I discovered and designed the John F. Class Health System. Now, at the age of seventy, I am as hale and vigorous as the average man in his thirty's-this too, despite the fact that my case was pronounced hopeless a score of years ago.
Filled with gratitude for what Health Fumes did for myself, I determined to give humanity the benefits of this wonderful achievement. Today institutions for the application of my discovery dot the country. It gives me great pleasure and satisfaction to announce the opening of the health Institution in this city under the capable direction of Mrs. Olive M. Binninger.
I invite you to attend the opening of the John F. Class health Institution at 1364 White Street-
Dubuque, Iowa, Reception from 9A.M.-5 P.M.
The new John F. Class Health Institution is now ready for service. I urge you to attend the opening. In order that visitors may inspect all parts of the institution and examine equipment, no treatments will be given on the opening day. In this Institution will be practiced the same methods which the more than two hundred John F. Class Institutions of the United States and Canada. The opening affords you a splendid opportunity to learn about the principles of the John F. Class Health System and to see how the treatments are given. Be sure to visit the institution on the opening day.
New Way to Health Without Drugs or Dieting
Are you worried about your health? Are you actually suffering with a disease which is causing you untold misery? If so, the opening of the John F. Class health Institution in this city is vitally important to you. It offers to you the benefits of a remarkable discovery which has brought renewed health and vitality to those who at one time regarded their afflictions as incurable. This Health System employs no drugs and no medicine, but relies on Nature's own healing and rejuvenating powers for its astonishing effectiveness. Read the amazing facts presented here.
A Health Resort at Your Door
There is nothing mysterious about the John F. Class System. The principle treatment consists of enveloping the body in the fumes of scientifically compounded minerals and oils. The fumes are applied at temperatures several degrees lower than blood heat, so there is none of the weakening effects of hot vapors, liquids, or adhesives.
The fumes drive out toxins from the body through the pores of the skin and counteract infections which may be present. Thus the John F. Class Health System goes to the very root of disease.
The functions of the John F. Class System are approximated in the famous health resorts where curative waters, vapors, and mineralized alluvial deposits are provided by Nature. The benefits of health resorts-and much more- can be found at the local John F. Class Institution without spending time and money for travel.

A Few of the Many Grateful Tributes to the John F. Class Health Fume System
Rheumatism-I suffered for eight months with sciatic rheumatism and tried everything I could think of for relief. I was taken to your institution on a stretcher and carried into your office. I had not walked a step in seven weeks. It was a great surprise to my relatives and friends to see the benefit I received
in a short time. In one week I was walking and in three weeks I was well. Mrs. H. E. Rodgers, Lacona, Iowa.
Arthritis-When I was brought to your Institution I had not walked a step in two months. I was nearly helpless. I had suffered for eight years with arthritis, gradually growing worse all the time. I had tried all kinds of treatments and was about to give up when I heard of your system. After taking the treatments for six months I could walk with crutches and a little later I was able to throw them away. I am now perfectly well. My friends and relatives were more than surprised to see me walking again as physicians thought I would never be able to. I will send others to you. Greta Rittgers, Marion, Iowa.
Kidney Trouble-A year ago while suffering from an acute attack of kidney trouble I started taking your wonderful mineral fume baths and felt greatly relieved after the first six treatments. I continued taking the treatments for two months and was completely cured of my ailment. I am now enjoying good health and it is indeed a pleasure to recommend Health Fumes. Ella C. Mastorson, San Francisco, Cal.
High Blood Pressure-I have suffered for high blood pressure for over a year. The pressure was over two hundred and twenty-five. I was in the hospital for a long time and no one thought I would live. At last I went to the John F. Class Fume Institution and took about thirty treatments. Now I am entirely well, and working every day. Gilbert B. Conner, Jackson, Mich.
Neuritis-A friend recommended that I try the John F. Class Health Fume System for neuritis, with which I had been suffering for fifteen years and I am certainly grateful to say that it has cured me after taking eighteen treatments. My husband was also cured of high blood pressure. We cannot thank you enough.
Great grandma Olive, this is for you, for all time, Love Joanne.

Keepers of the Secrets, Keepers of the Sacred Tales
Midwifery...
It was referred to as "A Calling"
We didn't just get a job, we had...
A Calling.
It was one's LIFE WORK.
What one was put on this earth for...
one's PURPOSE...
a JOB?
This was SACRED DUTY
Education was non-traditional.
Learning came from moms, dads and babies.
We are the Keepers of Secrets,
Keepers of the Sacred Tales,
The Sacred Stories
Some given to be shared
Some given to be held...
the sheer weight of the tale
needing more than one
to bear the burden,
to simply help to carry it into eternity.
Birth is a passage to womanhood
to Motherhood
to self discovery,
Through giving birth one comes face to face
with one's strengths and weaknesses
of character
as well as one's strengths and weaknesses.
One is introduced to new depths and heights
in preparation for what comes next.
The rest of the journey.
Embrace the journey,
The passage to motherhood.
Savor the moments
Fleeting and bittersweet.
Reap the wisdom and knowledge
that comes from giving birth
unencumbered with fear.
Rejoice in the miracle!
Since the beginning of time
Women have birthed in a sacred way.
NOW IS THE SACRED WAY...
